Special Church Meeting

‘‘ADVANCE NOTICE’’ A NNUAL GENERAL MEETIING

Wednesday 11th March 2009 7.30 p.m.

Again December is upon us and this is the last news letter of the year, the next one will be well into the new year and close to our Annual General Meeting. There are 3 important things to think about early in the new year. Before the Annual General Meeting:- 1. Nominations for the diaconate are required to be with the Church Secretary by the middle of February. The retiring deacons will be Joy Sergison, Keith Mitchell and Derek Neal. 2. Annual reports from all organisations should be forwarded to the Church Secretary by January 31st 2009. 3. Balance sheets from all organisations to be forwarded to the Treasurer by January 31st 2009. The AGM is open to all who are interested in the work of the church, views are welcome from any quarter but only Church Members are permitted to vote. If you would like to know more about church membership and getting more involved in the life of the church please talk to either one of the deacons or Peter Strong.

Gift Service

Christmas at Carey started on the 29th November when the church suddenly took a Christmas look with the decorations appearing. The first big event is on Sunday 7th December when we are holding our ‘Gift Service’, which this year is for a local charity called ‘Zach’s Helping Hand Appeal’ which raises money to send sick children and their families to a caravan for a family holiday. Zach’s father will be coming along to the service to tell us about the appeal and accept the money on their behalf.

CAROL SINGING

The following day we hope the Brigades will join the Church at Sunley Court for some Carol Singing for the residents there. The Sunday school have made a card for them and Peter will lead the Christmas Songs of Praise there. December 21st is the Christmas celebrations with the Family Service at 10.30 a.m. and the ‘Carols by Candlelight’ at 6.15 p.m. The children will be the centre of attraction in the morning with a mixture of the congregation giving the Christmas readings and some of your favourite carols. I am sure if you talk nicely to Peter he will include yours too!!

Christmas Services

On Christmas Eve we will be holding our now traditional Christingle Service but this year it will be at 5.30 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. to allow many of the people to get home from work. Again there will be a traditional service aimed at the family and children of all ages. The next morning, after you’ve opened all your presents come along to Carey as we celebrate the most important present of all. At 10.00 a.m. we will be holding a special Christmas morning service in the church when we welcome many of our friends for a short service of celebration. The following Sunday, 28th December, “Lord” Ted Scarfe will be preaching in a normal morning Service when the Junior Church will meet as normal. The first weekend in January (4th) will be a family service but there will be no parade.

Services on Dec 28th, January 4th, January 11th will be in the Church Hall

The January Church Meeting will decide whether to continue to hold services in the Hall.

Remembrance Service
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 8th November 2008 saw the Junior Church join with the rest of the church just before 11 o’clock to observe the 2 minutes silence to remember those who lost their lives in both World Wars and the many conflicts which have taken place over the years since then. Peter had asked the Boys’ Brigade to make a collage (above), he then used the collage on Friday night for the devotions and then again for the Sunday morning to mark the 90th anniversary of the signing of the amnesty at the end of the first world war: the time - 11 a.m. the day - 11th day of the 11th, month, the year - 1918.
The Girls’ Brigade - Jeanette Mitchell

On Saturday 22nd November 2008 girls from across the Girls’ Brigade Kettering Area all joined together to compete in GB’s Got Talent. Three girls from our company, Kayleigh (on the flute) and Bethany (on the recorder) performed “The Snowman” accompanied by Zoe on the piano. Their picture is on the front cover of the newsletter. After 13 excellent acts with performances including dance, singing, and joke telling, three girls from Central Methodist, pictured in the centre of the photo above, came out as the eventual winners. With the ages ranging from 6 to 17 all deserved a big round of applause for their efforts, well done to all of them - especially our girls!!

JUNIOR CHURCH NEWS

During the November parade service we brought £60 into the church for the Goodwill Village. Once again we would like to thank all the parents and relatives of the children who send their loose change each week. I hope in February to report on the total for the year . Also thanks to the friends in the church who send their pennies for us and those who do not attend our church who also stop me in the street and give me change towards the village, thanks for all their support. On Remembrance Sunday we all went into church at 11 o’clock to join with the congregation for the 2 minutes silence. Some of the boys from the Boys’ Brigade had made a collage for Peter. We are now getting prepared for our Christmas projects. Anne Mitchell Junior Church Secretary

THE STRONG WORD - Rev. Peter Strong

December 2008

There are many things, like bread and butter, or sea and sand that go together. These days Christmas and New Year are linked together by many. It has not always been so. In my younger days, Christmas was a holiday and New Year was just another ordinary working day. There was not the strong link there is today. Many people now have an extended break- some save up their holiday and get a nice long gap from normal work, others, like schools are just given the fortnight off. Many clubs and meetings just stop for a number of weeks over this holiday season. This year I have noticed that many factories, due to the recession, are closing around the 18th December and not reopening until the 6th of January. By the time we get back to “normal” in January things have changed and even the nights are getting lighter. For those who call ourselves Christians, the festive season should invite change, as we welcome Jesus our Saviour into the world and our lives, and Christmas becomes New Year. Much is made in the nativity plays we see of the full Inns and hotels in Bethlehem leaving no room for the Mary and Joseph and their precious baby Jesus. Is there room in our life for Jesus today? Despite all the holidays that we get these days, all the labour saving devices such as dishwashers and whatever, we can still find ourselves rushed off our feet and carried away – even in these economically difficult times - with the razzamatazz of the season. Jesus comes I believe to those who are like the wise men and the shepherds, to those who will stop what they are doing, and at some personal cost, seek him out. Where we go and what we do in 2009 (and who we influence and are used to bless) will depend very much on how much we made time and space for Jesus in our lives during December 2008. I am always surprised that after meeting with Jesus, the wise men were told to go home by a different route. I believe that if Christmas really is celebrated – and I am not thinking just of Turkey and Tinsel or even the occasional drink – then the new year really will be The New Year, and we shall find ourselves responding by going in a different direction than the one we had hoped and planned. Hopefully we will find ourselves more interested in the call of Jesus on our lives than the call of the world. May I take this opportunity of wishing you a very happy Christmas, in the real sense of the word, and a peaceful, fruitful and maybe different New Year than the one you were expecting!
